The Shedding of Light

Pastor:
Passage: Isaiah 58:1-9,1 Corinthians 2:1-12,Matthew 5:13-20

Combining the salt and light passages from our Old Testament and Gospel lessons sheds a new perspective on the meaning of discipleship.  Followers of Jesus fulfill the law and the prophets by answering Isaiah’s call to justice as the path to divine connection.  It was when the Israelites turned their backs on justice and compassion that they lost sight of God.  But when they saw the light—that justice is the center of a godly life—the light broke forth like the dawn, shining brightly on and through them. A city on a hill cannot be hid. Our lives are salty with Christ-like love and mercy when we feed the hungry, house the homeless, and break the yokes of oppression wherever may be.  Let the light shine!
