“What is truth?” Pilate asks Jesus, offering a stark, this-worldly contrast to the cosmic, royal imagery of the other readings. We are told the Son of Man rides on the clouds to judge the world, that Jesus is the ruler of all the kings of the earth, but the Jesus we see is far from lifted up and glorified. He is a prisoner, going toe-to-toe with the Roman governor, testifying to an ultimate truth that will not be denied. May truth reign.
