The call to humility and meekness is prevalent throughout Scripture. Prophets pointed to the suffering Messiah who would be scorned and slaughtered unjustly by, yet for, the people. Jesus humbled himself for that purpose. When his disciples squabbled over who was greatest, He calls him to child-like submission if they desire the kingdom, whoever is first being last. This may not be the way the world seems to work; but, as James declares, it is “the wisdom that comes from heaven.”
