Breaking the Cycle

Passage: Judges 2:6-19, Matthew 4:1-13

“It’s déjà vu all over again!” Yogi Berra is credited with saying. How often the same cycle of cause and effect, trial and error, peril and deliverance seem to play out in our lives. In the book of Judges, the people of Israel fall away from the Lord, get oppressed, cry out to the Lord, and God sends a deliverer to rescue them; and things are good…until he dies. Then it repeats itself all over again. We, too, often fall into the same pattern. But thanks be to God, Jesus not only shows us how to deal with temptation, but by doing so delivers us from sin, death, and the devil.
