Passage: Deuteronomy 34:1-12,1 Thessalonians 2:1-8,Matthew 22:34-46

There is a fine line between revering the past and moving beyond it to do the work at hand. Moses is remembered with honor…and then Joshua moves his people forward. Jesus declares that love is the greatest commandment, then tries to dislodge the Pharisees from their focus on King David as the messianic ancestor.  Paul reminds the Thessalonians that although he came humbly and gently, the message that he—still—proclaims is powerful.  Today we acknowledge our Lutheran heritage, but look to find new ways to present our crucified and risen Lord to the thirsty souls of the 21st century.
