THEME OF THE DAY

Today is the Day of Pentecost—the birthday of the Christian Church. A more descriptive name for it might be the Festival Day of the Holy Spirit. The first Pentecost was a dramatic occasion filled with the fury of wind and burning flames. Jesus’ disciples were transformed from timidity and fear to bold, commissioned proclaimers of the Gospel. On this momentous day, the Spirit of God is unleashed upon the church to ignite faith and sanctify lives.

LESSONS:

FIRST LESSON: Acts 2:1-21

On Pentecost, Jews from every nation on earth were gathered in Jerusalem. When the Spirit descended upon the apostles, they were amazed to hear in Gospel in their own languages.

SECOND LESSON: Romans 8:22-27

Paul speaks of hope—believing in what cannot be seen and waiting for it with patience.

GOSPEL LESSON: John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15

“It is to your benefit that I go away,” Jesus assures his disciples, “for the Father will send you the Helper.”
