Dealing with “Others”
When thinking about the prophet Jonah, we dwell so much on his being gobbled up by a big fish that we don’t wrestle with the reason he refuses to go to Nineveh as God commanded. It wasn’t that he was afraid or that he had better things to do—they were the enemy! He didn’t want to them to hear the Lord’s warning; they might respond and be saved. What is our attitude toward those who hurt us or threaten us or are simply so very different from us we don’t like them? Jesus says to love them.
