An essential core of Jesus’ teaching was his use of parable. Mark tells us, “With many parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it. He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his disciples he explained everything.” [Mark 4:33-34]. We remember stories, and ponder the message contained in them. That is true even today. He begins with, “The kingdom of God is like…” and provides an insight into God’s activity in, and His desire for, His creation and His children.
