Those Pharisees! The very word conjures up images of hypocritical, narrow-minded puffed-up religious losers. But in New Testament times being a Pharisee was a badge of honor. They went out of the way to worship God and do good deeds. And yet they are portrayed as Jesus’ enemies. He took issue with them again and again for their arrogance and the extreme righteousness they demanded of others. Unfortunately, we have a lot more in common with them than we’d like to admit. Could the same words Jesus said to them apply to us also?
